One of the smallest gazelle species, agile and swift, capable of sprinting up to 80 km/h to evade predators like jackals and cheetahs. They can withstand losing up to 20% of their body weight in fluids before suffering adverse metabolic consequences.

Saharan Birds

Ammomanes, Bubo ascalaphus, Chlamydotis

Key species include the Pharaoh Eagle-Owl (a formidable nocturnal desert hunter), the Desert Horned Lark, and the nomadic Spotted Sandgrouse, whose males absorb water in specialized belly feathers to fly up to 50 km back to chicks in their nest.

The Saharan Horned Viper (Cerastes cerastes) moves via sidewinding, minimizing contact with boiling sand. The vegetarian Spiny-Tailed Lizard (Uromastyx or Dab) digs deep burrows up to two meters underground to escape the daytime furnace.

A prostrate vine bearing round yellow melon-like fruits across sand dunes. Despite its intensely bitter pulp, its oily seeds have historically provided drought-survival nourishment to nomadic desert travelers.
